Things Get Real Weird Down Under in Hulu’s Koala Man

It all seems so normal… at first. I mean, “normal” is relative, and a man in a koala mask trying to stop hoodlums is way more normal than whatever’s happening with kangaroos and aliens at the end of this trailer. Koala Man co-stars Hugh Jackman, and comes from Michael Cusack (Smiling Friends), who has been making wacky animated videos for over a decade.

Koala Man is executive produced by Rick & Morty co-creator Justin Roiland, and has Pokemon: Detective Pikachu writers Dan Hernandez and Benji Samit as showrunners. The summary sounds quirky enough:

Koala Man follows middle-aged dad Kevin and his titular not-so-secret identity, whose only superpower is a burning passion for following rules and snuffing out petty crime in the town of Dapto. Though it may seem like any other Australian suburb, forces of evil both cosmic and man-made lie in wait to pounce on unsuspecting Daptonians. On a quest to clean up his hometown, and often roping his frustrated family into his adventures, Koala Man stands at the ready. He’ll do whatever it takes to defeat villainous masterminds, supernatural horrors, or worse: jerks who don’t take their rubbish bins down on the proper days.

But this does not even begin to hint at the mean eagles, belligerent kangaroos, murdering… plants? and strange happenings that start to pile up in the show’s trailer. There’s also a cameo from Cusack’s Damo and Darren.

Creator Cusack stars as Koala Man himself; Jackman is his boss, Big Greg; Succession‘s Sarah Snook is Vicky; and Hugo Weaving, Jemaine Clement, and Miranda Otto all make appearances. Koala Man swings into action on Hulu on January 9th.
